Enom.com Review

Background

Growth Status: (by websites quantity): Decreasing
Enom.com is a major domain registrar functioning since 1997. Its story actually began in Flint, Michigan in 1993, and in 2017 it was acquired by Tucows. Enom is also ICANN accredited registrar.
Enom is a major domain registrar, the history of which dates back to 1997. It was originally set up in Kirkland, Washington, as a wholesale business. Its founder, Paul Stahura, used his garage as its first office: at that time, the only equipment he had was a lone computer with an ISDN line.
Enom is first and foremost a domain registrar, but it also provides hosting services. Today, it hosts about 480,000 domains (by HRank), and manages over 16 mln, which is representative of what it has focused on over the years.
In 2006, the company became part of Demand Media (known today as Leaf Group), which was formed after the purchase of several other companies, including BulkRegister, another major player. In 2007, BulkRegister, in its turn, was acquired by Enom, and it is now used as a separate service. In 2017, Enom was acquired by Tucows, a Canadian company, which made the latter the largest wholesale domain registrar.
The company’s history does not feature mind-blowing plot twists, and it has not been involved in scandals that much. One of the few examples is the 2008 case, when Enom blocked several domain names used by a travel company based in Europe and offering trips to Cuba. It was done to support the US Treasury blacklist, and according to a Treasury representative, that company contributed to evasion of the US embargo against Cuba by tourists.
Offers and Pricing
Name | Domains | Disk | Bandwidth | Min Price | Billing Term |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Starter | 1 | 20 Gb | 200 Gb | $5.96 | 12 Mo |
Advanced | 1 | 40 Gb | 400 Gb | $9.76 | 12 Mo |
Power | 1 | 100 Gb | 1000 Gb | $19.68 | 12 Mo |
The company offers a rich choice of hosting plans and multi-faceted support with the use of advanced technical and software solutions. Along with standard hosting services, it presents integrated website hosting options.
There are 3 shared hosting plans on offer with the cheapest option starting from $5.96/mo, if you purchase a plan for 12 months at once.
Subscription plans can be purchased monthly, once in 3 or 6 months, once a year.
Among other services are:
- Cloud Storage: JustCloud
- Domain registration and transfer,
- DNS hosting,
- Exact hosting migration,
- their own Website Builder,
- and a variation of website security features and services.
However, there are some off-putting things about Enom.com. For example, they do not exercise refund policies or money-back guarantees. We have only found the mentions of 14-day free trials for G Suite by Google Cloud and Website Builder.
Also, unlike most web hosting services, Enom is quite restrictive about bandwidth and disk space.
What the company is less restrictive about domain names: it provides 50 domains per account plus unlimited number of subdomains. This is what Enom is actually renowned for.
Support
Instant Technical Live Support: No
The company offers a variation of support options, and 24/7 helpdesk is among them. However, unfortunately, upon our check, it does not work as they claim. Well, at least there are other ways, phone support 24/7 (again), for instance. We haven’t checked it in the middle of the night, so, we hope, this is not an empty promise.
Enom Summary Analysis by HRank
For 2018 and for 2019 years Enom leaves much to be desired – 4.8 HRank, 102d place and 6.1 HRank, 102 place.
Even though its average uptime was 99.802% and 99.922%, it was never 100% from June to December 2018. There also was a case of 97.487% once on 1 December 2019, which is a bad sign for a large and well-known provider.
Though its response time was in the highest range, it couldn’t make up for the less than perfect uptime, unfortunately.
The number of Shared IPs was in decline, however, the number of domains hosted there also decreased (especially since September 2018). Thus, it looks like users don’t find the services of the company quite acceptable.
Enom is not on our recommendation list.
